Places to Visit in Digha, West Bengal

Digha is the most popular and famous sea resort tourist place of West Bengal. Digha located in the district East Midnapore of Indian state West Bengal. Digha popularly knew was as Beerkul. Digha beaches are surrounded by Casuarinas tree, which makes it more charming and makes a wonderful environment with the rumbling of sea waves. As the reason, thousands of tourists come here to spend holidays. You can see Sunrise and Sunset both from this Digha beach. You will be fascinated to the reflecting of the Sunrise and Sunset, it creates a fantastic scene. Here you can visit mainly two beaches one is Old Digha and another in New Digha.

 

Old Digha is the most popular sea resort with lots of crowds, especially in session. In Old Digha, you may take sunbathe and can be swimming in low tide. However, not in high tide, it’s very dangerous. The most attractive scene of old Digha when comes the high tide and the waves hitting on the big stone and overflowing the water. New Digha is approx 2 km from Old Digha. New Digha is very attractive for its wide and flat beaches. In this new beach are safe for swimming and sunbathe. You can join here different type of activities like horse-riding, play volleyball on the beach, boat riding etc. Walking through the shade of Tamarisk trees (in Bengali Jhau), it’s more pleasurable and adds more pleasantness situation with the tweets of birds mixed with roaring sound of waves.

Shankarpur Beach

It is the virgin and twin beach of Digha, which is located nearly 14 km from Digha through Contai road. This beach is encircled with Casuarinas tree. Shankarpur beach is low crowd then Digha. The main attraction of Shankarpur Beach is Shankarpur Fishing Harbor Project.

The Marine Aquarium and Research Center (MARC)

Another attraction of Digha is The Marine Aquarium and Research Center, Which located on the opposite side of Digha State General Hospital. This is the largest and well equipped marine aquarium in the Country. It is open for the public Monday to Saturday from 09.30 A.M to 06.0 P.M.

Junput

Junput is another popular beach, which is near Digha. It is only 40 km from Digha town. Buses are available to reach Junput, also you can hire a private car. This place is famous for fishing. Best time to visit here from October to March.

Talsari

This beach is very charming and delightful, which is located in Orissa. Distance from Digha town is only about 10 km. You can see here the famous Subarnarekha river which meets with the Bay of Bengal. The main attraction of Talsari beach is Red Cards.

Amravati Park

It is a small park but beautiful, located in New Digha. You can get the pleasure of Boat riding in Amravati lake. Besides this lake Depak Mitra’s snake farm is another attraction of this place.

Mandarmani

Mandarmani is a suitable beach for those who don’t love overcrowd. You can say that the Mandarmani is a solitary beach. But it gets popularity day by day to tourists. Located only 23 km distance from Digha town. Local transport services are available to reach Mandarmani. It is more flat and wide beach than New Digha beach, approx 13 km long motorable beach. In a manner of speaking it is a long beach road in India. You can enjoy driving on this beach.

Shopping in Digha

The major shopping market is on the Old Digha and also in New Digha. Here you can purchase a various type of pearl necklaces, ornaments and curious which is made of seashells, varieties hand woven mats made of weeds with attractive and colorful design, cottage crafts, sankha or Shankh and many more.

When to Visit Digha

Best time to visit Digha is from September to February. In this time increase its beauty, due to the days are clear and pleasant evening. Try to avoid in monsoon season from July to August.

How to Reach Digha

Kolkata is the nearest city of Digha, which is well connected by road and train. The distance between Kolkata and Digha is nearly 185 km. It takes time approx 5 hours to reach Digha.

By Air

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is the nearest to Digha. This airport is well connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and all the major cities of the country. After reached here you can hire a private car or take bus journey from Esplanade and Howrah bus stands to reach Digha.

By Train

Digha is directly connected by train from Howrah Railway Station (Kolkata). It takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach Digha. Howrah Digha Duranto Express, Tamralipta Express, Paharia Express, and Howrah – Digha Superfast Express runs from Howrah to Digha regularly via Kanthi.

By Road

Hourly bus services are available from Kolkata (Esplanade or Dharmatala and Howrah Bus Stand) to Digha. Direct buses take around 5 hours from Kolkata via Kharagpur. Also, you can hire a private car to go Digha.

    • Thanks for your comment. Old Digha is nearly 1.9 Km away from Digha Railway flag station. You can take a toto rickshaw to go Old Digha, it will take around 5-7mins.
